Community Involvement

Snedden Hall & Gallop Lawyers enjoys a reputation for commitment to the ACT community that spans almost 60 years. There are two major long-term community initiatives that the firm drives annually: The Be the Best You Can Be sports day for children with a disability and the Snedden Hall & Gallop University Scholarship. Please see below for more information.

Our firm celebrates the role of sporting and community organisations in Canberra and our team is eager to assist when the opportunity arises. Snedden Hall & Gallop has long and supportive relationships with St Vincent de Paul Society, Canberra Raiders, Pedal Power ACT and Capital Football.

We also provide legal assistance to a number of local not-for-profit organisations in matters of corporate governance, contract law, leasing and employment law. Where possible, we offer these services on a pro bono basis. We’re always happy to hear about the activities being undertaken by community groups and invite you to contact us if your organisation might be interested in working with our firm in the future.

Be the Best You Can Be sports day for children with a disability

The SHG Be the Best You Can Be sports day has now been running for 18 years and attracts students from over 15 different Canberra primary schools, high schools and colleges. This event allows a child with a physical or intellectual disability to participate in a range of modified sport events in a fun and supportive environment. The students take part in a rotation of activities, with 2018 events including basketball, soccer, rugby league, the Modified Rugby Program, sprints, long jump and an obstacle course. The next sports day will take place in the second half of 2020.

Sponsors: The staff at Snedden Hall & Gallop are not alone in creating this fantastic day out. The day would not be possible without the continued support of our enthusiastic and generous sponsors, including Sport Australia, Supabarn, Capital Chemist, Cancer Council ACT, Party Down Productions, Marist College Canberra, Panache Driver Training, YMCA, ACT State Emergency Service, ACT Policing and the Canberra Raiders.

Celebrity attendance: In 2018, we were lucky to have some amazing local athletes join us as well. Thank you to: Louise Ellery – paralympic seated shot put champion; Sue Powell – paralympic gold and silver medal cyclist; Cam Crombie – World Para Athletics Championships Gold Medallist; Canberra Vikings Players – Ben Hyne, Darcy Swain & Jordan Jackson-Hope; Brumbies Players – Connal McInerney, Andy Muirhead and Tevita Kuridrani; and the Canberra Capitals.

Mascots: We had renowned sports announcer Tim Gavel calling the first-ever mascot Dance Off. Competitors included YMCA’s Filbert Frog, Cancer Council’s Sid the Seagull, Victor the Viking, Paddy Platypus and SHG’s very own Shaggy.

Dance party: A first for this event, the Woden School’s Party Down Productions put on a fantastic dance party. You should have seen the conga line of mascots and children. Truly awesome!

Snedden Hall & Gallop University Scholarship

The Snedden Hall & Gallop University Scholarship recognises academic excellence and provides financial assistance to students aspiring to study law in Canberra. Each year we offer two scholarships that provide the successful Year 12 graduates with financial support over their first three years of their legal studies.

Since it began in 1999, the scholarship has been a unique mechanism for Snedden Hall & Gallop to support the next generation of Canberra lawyers. All recipients have the opportunity to undertake work experience at our offices, with the possibility of subsequent employment.

You may meet some scholarship winners in your dealings with our firm. Current staff members who have come through the Scholarship program include Gene Schirripa and Gemma Butler.

Former recipients have gone on to become lawyers at firms across Australia, High Court associates, academics, University Medallists, an ACT Young Lawyer of the Year, the Young Canberra Citizen of the Year, an Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations and a Rhodes Scholar. You can read more about the achievements of past winners here.

The scholarship competition is open to all ACT Year 12 students (you do not need to be undertaking legal studies) and is supported by the University of Canberra.
